The Harsh Reality of Streaming Revenue for Artists
I have very serious question for you?
Why are there so much different streaming services for fans to get access to music?
Have you ever sat back and just contemplated about why there are so much streaming services for artist?
Itโs actually quite simple once explainedโฆ
Learning how detrimental the money math is for independent artist like myself and how profitable it is for these companies at zero risk, will be completely eye opening.
Streaming services alongside distribution companies are great at the exploitation of the artist and fan connection.
So much so, artist and fans can be thought about as collectible characters like in one of your favorite games.
The streaming services created the game in which they get the choice of how strong or weak a character is by putting a cap on the level of 100 rather than infinity, if you want it to be so.
Artist songs are collected by these streaming services to collect fans data such as their likes, interested, and dislikes for advertisement purposes.
The explanation goes beyond just the streaming platform but charging other companies to advertise on these platforms to fans as to get them to click off their favorite music to monetize their attention elsewhere.
As an extension of these companies exploitive efforts, artist themselves have to both pay advertising fees to promote their single songs on these platforms and pay to promote their other songs on these platforms constantly to achieve the attention their song needs to serve their fans.
The algorithms that these companies use are designed to have artist work for the streaming services by constantly having artist drop music consistently in order to push their music at the head of the attention pool over other artist who release music less frequently.
Without constantly releases, you need a high budget marketing strategy to constantly promote your music to get the attention from these streaming services which also splits the streaming revenue among other artist who may not have a budget to promote their music.
So not only are artist being exploited for making the song though channels such as distribution and royalty collection companies but the streaming platform has made their exploitation so acceptable that they have made it that other artist who may not have worked as hard on their craft benefit from independent marketing budgets.
This means even if they do not have a direct collaboration to make money from the artist and their fans efforts, they still get support.
Picture yourself getting in your car, driving to the nearest store, parking, getting out the car, walking into to the store, and getting your shopping cart.
You take out your phone to check your shopping list and start making your way down each isle that has everything you can for and put it in the cart.
In this way, you find some nice things you didnโt think about and pick them up too.
As your cart is filled, you recheck your list and realize that youโve gotten everything on your list so you make your way towards the check out.
You wait in line because there are other people in front of you but your turn eventually comes to get to the register.
As you begin taking your stuff out the cart to begin scanning, you notice that there is some person watching you and has a lot of items in their hand.
You find it weird but you think to yourself โwhateverโ because they have nothing to do with you.
As you scan your first item, they sudden come and scan their item for you to pay for.
You see the price is only $.99 so you think, well maybe they just need a little help.
You proceed again with scanning your item and they come again but this time is for $12.99 so you say, โexcuse me, what are you doing?โ
This is the equivalent of what occurs every time a fan streams a song on a streaming platform.
When the song gets played and the next song isnโt a song by the next artist even if they have a whole catalog together, the streaming platforms algorithm find a famous artist who is owned by a label and have the fan listening to their music next.
The reason the algorithm does this is because the major labels own stock in these streaming services and both entities are ensuing that they are going to benefit from independent artist budgets.
The fear of losing access to your potential future favorite artist music that could completely transform your life as a fan is at a high risk to very little risk to these streaming platforms.
These platforms are not artist and fan connection environmentally friendly.
The High Cost of Creative Pursuits
As a fan, never has it truly been explained the cost of pursuing creative pursuits to serve the community of fans that demand music from their favorite artist.
Ever wonder why big artist seem to make these big lifestyle purchases in front of your eyes and then you find out that they are on the verge of bankruptcy or something similar in nature?
Companies are great at making the public think that artist are millionaires or billionaires though the expense purchases they make.
This works to trick the public into buying into a recipe of success because they understand that peopleโs fundamental frequency is designed to want to invest into what is elevated because if you surround yourself near successful people then their success can become apart of your personal fortune.
This is why purchasing clothing made from an artist or listening to a song on a particular streaming platform aids in becoming part of a successful and acceptable trend,
If something looks successful then investing in it in some way only makes logical sense and make you looks successful for your investment in that artist.
You then find out that these major artist are almost always on the verge of bankruptcy which comes to a huge surprise to the public as how this could be possible when they just โSupposedlyโ made a huge purchase for millions of dollars.
The reality is that most independent artist are living the same reality but why building a relationship for $9.99 alongside itโs bonus products would make the world of difference for allowing me to create another song.
– Cost of the Beat
Most artist tends to try to stick towards a set group of producers that make beats for the artist because what it does, is keeps a consistent flow of music that they know will be best to serve their audience.
This create a consistent flow of music to serve a dedicated fanbase.
This is extremely important aspect of the fan connection because while the fan enjoys the artist, whether they know it or not, they also are a fan of the beats.
Independent artist usually pay producers an upfront fee of $5,000 to the producer including 50% of the revenue generated from the producers service.
This means that $4.99 is cut in half giving the artist $2.49 left to make money from each sale if you bought the song directly.
Think of a major artist music that you love.
When you hear a new with a certain producers tag, you get extremely excited because you know the producer and the artist has made bangers in the past.
The math looks painfully different when it comes to streaming services which Iโm going to explain in a second.
Beat$5,000
– Recording Cost
Artist usually has 2 different options when it comes to making the most of their recording budget.
Most artist will pay a professional recording studio the minimum of $100 an hour at a 4 hour to get the most significant sound quality or they can invest in equipment on their own.
From the cost of purchasing equipment such as microphone, computer, monitor, recording program, and more, this about $6,000 – $10,000 total excluding purchasing courses to properly learning how to get the best use of their equipment.
Studio Time Recording Budget: $400 at a 4 hour minimum
Studio Equipment: $6000
– Mixing Engineer Cost
The quality of a song cannot sound ready for the world stage without the assistance of an average mixing engineer.
A professional mixing engineer will cost an artist an average of $100 dollars per track plus a standard set rate for their service.
At the average cost to hire a professional mixing engineer to know you will get the results you desire would start at $3000.
The total amount of the tracks would start from all the instruments and sound of the beat which then crosses over to the many different tracks that stem over to the vocal recording which includes lead, back up, doubles, emphasis, adlibs, and many more to make a song sound ready for the world stage.
Mixing Engineer: $3000 + $100 per track
– Mastering Cost
Mastering is the final step towards making is song translatable throughout any environment.
This steps ensures that a mastering engineer will make an artist song sound good in different cars, headphones, concert halls, stores, and any other environment where music is played.
Mastering Engineer Cost: $500 – $1000
– Content Creation Cost
Content creation is a necessary step towards creating a reason for fans to get a chance to experience the song of an artist.
Without a consistent flood of content to social media platforms, artist will have a very difficult time getting to that person who will discover the music the artist makes.
For an independent artist to reach their audience, they MUST have a mixture of paid media and organic media running at the same time to reach the people who will connect to with the artist music first and eventually the artist.
Consistency of posting content, advertising, and promotion though working for the algorithm on social platforms is what will help the algorithm for where artist fans exists.
Content creation is made up of a couple of steps to be done correctly.
Artist usually purchase most of the equipment or they hire someone and do it all themselves.
DIY(Do It Yourself) Equipment Cost:
$5000(Camera, lights, editing software, gimbal, etc)
Videographer Cost: $100 per video
Video Editor Cost: $300 per 60 seconds
– Marketing Budget
Marketing and promotion can be split into 2 different types of cost.
Marketing material and advertising budget.
Marketing material are physical and digital assets that work to help create an experience for fans of an artist song such as blog content, flyers, business cards, poster, and ect.
Marketing Campaign Budget Cost: $50,000 +
Advertisement budget can be understood as promoting the song alongside the marketing material that would make the song find the people who would desire to listen.
Social Media Daily Advertising Budget: $10 a day +
How to break your heart
As you can see, artist go through the most financial flows between working, saving money to investment in their art, and place it in front of the people who would find their work worthy of becoming a integral moment in the lives of their fans.
The connection between artist and fans are the same as a connection of long time friendships.
Artist has no problem making the sacrifices necessary to become a 2 – 3 minute time slot in the lives of their fans.
Here is how you will learn how these companies take advantage of this genuine connection.
– Distribution Company Percentage
In order for an artist to make money from their art, they must go through the first middle company which is a distributor also known as an aggregator.
The artist must sign up to the company and what this company does is place the artist single on all the streaming platforms that exist for an entry fee of $9.99 – $99.99 depending on how many songs the artist is having distributed.
You would think that this wouldnโt be a problematic thing because while yes it is a one time fee but this one time fee comes with an extra payment expense for the royalties that they collect from the streaming services.
Letโs say without the bonus that you get from buying from directly, letโs say that the song is selling for $9.99.
Most distribution companies also double dip on the fan relationship by taking a 20% commission from the total amount of royalties they collect from the artist.
What this means is that every $9.99 the artist makes at 20% commission the distribution company would take $1.99.
1 Unit Sold – 20% Artist Collects: $7.99
Get A Tour of My Traphall Music Catalog and Join my Free Fanbase Social Platform!
– Royalty Collection Company Percentage
Royalty collections company main focus are exactly what they the titles suggest their functions are.
Companies that collect the royalties a song generates.
These companies collects royalties 2 different types of royalties that a song generates every time it get played.
Royalties are generated from the master/sound recording and the other is the publishing/songwriting.
Every time a song gets played on the radio station, internet radio, or streaming platform, the revenue generated from each play is collected by these companies.
Sound Recordings/Masters Percentage: 6%
Songwriting/Publishing Percentage: 12%
Distribution 20% + 18% Royalties Collected Company Artist Collects: $6.55
The True Cost of a Stream: Splitting Pennies
The huge jump from $9.99 for the cost that it takes to make 1 song is undeniable unreasonable considering how much risk the artist must take to make a living from their art without a company.
The most important aspect now is to understand what is the rate that streaming platforms are taking from artist that are the main control between the artist to fan relationship?
At 38% fees at no cost to these companies should be understood as nothing more than the exploitation of the fans relationship with artist.
What is the payment rate for a typical stream?
If you didnโt know, most streaming platforms pay an average rate of $0.003 per stream.
This means that it would take my song Breeze – Straight getting played 1000 times to accumulate $3.
To achieve getting paid $9.99 for the song without the bonuses that Iโm giving you for purchasing today, my song has to be played roughly 3000 times to make this amount.
With the distribution and the royalties collection agency taking a combined of 38% of the top before I see a penny, would you believe me if I told you that the streaming services also take a huge chunk from the earning of my song?
The percentage amount that streaming platforms take from exploiting the artist and fan relationships is a dreadful 30% of the profits.
This means is that from the $6.55 that is left over from the distribution company and royalties collection companies has an additional percentage taken from the earnings of 30% that is now greatly reduced to $4.58 without much risk.
As an independent artist, the two people who share the most risk of creating the song would be the artist and the producer.
What this means is that the revenue generated is split 50% between the artist and the producer which rightfully so reduces the revenue amount to $2.29 per $9.99 accumulated.
If the monthly listeners on a streaming platform is only 3000 people, artist are typically making $69 per month of their streams.
How much does this actually affect artist specifically more than it does producers?
If you want to see your artist come to your town and perform the song you love, how would they afford to do so when they are only making $69 per month with the added cost of gas, hotel, food, living expenses, and paying for the team to travel with them?
The touring independent artist should understand that the $2.29 will have to split 50% to take care of all the cost of their traveling expenses which means that artist are typically going to be paid $1.15 monthly.
Having a monthly rate so low to earn $1.15 off their music, becoming a full time independent artist must now be understood as close to impossible without artist creating desirable merchandise for fans, sponsorship deals, and endorsement deals from other companies.
Clearly no money in the economy for artist.
If this is the equation for equation for making money off music is at such a all time low, would major labels take another 90% of their artist earnings of roughly $1.15 turning the artist profit into a whopping great sum of $.23 for every $9.99 earned?
Itโs because most of these major record labels own stock in these streaming companies so they earn off the top at the cost of the fan to artist relationship.
By owning stocks in these platforms, the incentive to push for profit for the label for the usage of their signed artist catalog has many advantages for the label over the artist.
By pushing high streaming numbers as a marker of success, they can control the perception that streaming is the new frontier for independent artist and fans.
By controlling your perception as a fan of that the artist is generating a lot of money or are โmillionairesโ because of high streaming numbers, this pushes fans to think that they are actually supporting the artist career through streaming.
In actuality, fans are supporting the companies that has direct control over the artist livelihood which in turn takes control of the fans livelihood.
This pushes independent artist to have to create a large catalog of music in order to hopefully make enough money to eat which makes the independent artist have to work for the streaming platforms algorithms.
If you give this a proper thought, this is nothing more or less than reverse engineering of slavery into an acceptable manner through psychological manipulation that has been widely accepted as the social norm by programming peopleโs perception of what success looks like rather than what it actually is.
Responsibility without authority is slavery.
As an independent artist, I donโt get to determine the royalty collection, distribution, and streaming companies rates that they can collect from our relationship.
They are benefiting through free labor in the terms of slavery.
Itโs breaks my heart to not be able to make a genuine connection with the active listener who connect with my music on these platforms streaming platforms to give them notices of special private events, special bonus from purchasing from me directly, paying a monthly bill of my fans, and much more activities that make people miss out on due to streaming culture.
– Distribution 20% + 18% Royalties Collected Company + Streaming Company 30%: $4.58
Streaming fraud you didnโt commit
Imagine waking up and getting ready to go to work as youโve always done.
You put on your clothes, deodorant, shoes, and leave throughout the door.
You get in your car drive to your job, work the designated hours, and come back home afterwards to kick off your clothes, shower, stream your show for a little bit to relax before you go to bed.
Itโs a normal day like every other day has been.
You wake up the next day to guns in your face with people suddenly yelling at you not to move or speak and follow directions that your completely ignorant of the reality of why your in this situation when you have kept your regular routine.
You follow the directions that the law enforcer tells you while reading you your rights and puts you in the car to take you to a secret interrogation room.
They begin to question your activities for the last days in which your confused because by your knowledge, you have kept your routine pretty similar besides several other activities that you enjoy with family or friends.
For reasons unknown to you, you are being charged with fraud because you have been understood as trying to rig the system to make money through false methods.
You wonder how that is possible when you have been doing legitimate work buy you are in prison for 5 years with no bond.
You are innocent, done legitimate work taught to you, and yet, somehow you have been convicted of a crime.
This is easily what can occur to any artist who puts all their effort into building a catalogue of streaming services for their fan base.
As an example, if I were to hire a marketing agency to help me with getting my music in front of my fans or get me new fans.
This is a legitimate approach to getting fans but what if this agency desires not to do the correct thing.
Letโs say I give them a budget of $5,000 and then they decide that the payment that they want is $3,500 rather than keeping $1500 for themselves to do business with me.
The agency decides to hire another company to handle the campaign but this next company isnโt doing legitimate business and uses bots or streaming farm to get plays.
Bots are fake profiles that people create on platforms that one person may about 100 accounts.
What they would do on those accounts is have these profiles on phones that they will use several phones to falsely accumulate plays which makes the streaming services play for fake streams.
As an artist, I would be thrilled at the fact that a song of mine has half a million plays being I would think half a million people played my song but the reality is that 1 person has several different accounts that are putting up those numbers.
When one of these streaming services gets a hold of this illegal activity, they donโt ask the artist what made this occur that you have so many bot profiles streaming their music or ask what company did the artist hire that made this activity occur but simply bans the artist music.
Artist barely makes enough money to live off their art due to the low streaming numbers but then can this easily be penalized for streaming fraud when they didnโt commit any type of fraudulent activity.
This can lead to artist to being banned, lost access to their fanbase on streaming platforms, lost to another stream of income, and most importantly, fans lose access to their artist music.
Fans and Their Artist: The Value of Direct Relationships
The combine amount of money these companies make from the exploitation from artist and fans relationships being a total of 68% from companies who share no fate in the failure or success of the artist is beyond unreasonable.
A goal of a fan is to support the longevity of the career for the artist who provide them with music that resonates with them in a personal way.
Companies have figured out not only how to take advantage of this opportunity but doesnโt care if their artist can continue making music for their fans.
The fear of not being able to get access to their artist new music due to the financial constraints laid upon artist creative endeavors, are one that is of universal concern for all artist and their fans alike.
It is on the artist responsibility to ensure the longevity of their career by creating a pathway that can help lead both fans and their artist to be able to support an artist career.
The means to do so is by creating a directly allowing minimal impact of outside influences that can make or break an artist.
For this reason, I developed a method that can ensure to cut of the companies that exploit the relationships between me and my fans in a way that give the biggest impact to determine the future of my career.
My goal is to not allow companies who share no risk on my career and put my date in fans who appreciate what I do and want me to make more of what I do to serve them.
Iโm only interested in giving the control of my career into the hands of the my fans and give no opportunity for another company that can exploit this genuine connection.

Streaming services has only 2 main function for Independent artist.
Discovery and sonic branding abilities that far exceed the way that artist would be able to afford on their own.
