The Making Of The Beat

I just want to start of by saying thank you for following along to the newsletter.

I put a lot of work into making all of this for you and I’m so sure your going to enjoy what all I have done for you.

Today, I will get into explains the way that Breeze – Straight beat was was made.

I want to start of by saying there are three different types of beatmakers.

The first types of producers are the ones who make a beat using digital instruments or sounds by sound designers as a means to compose a beat.

The second producers are the types who use loops from other producers who make melodies for them and then they create the drum patterns alongside arrange the beats.

Lastly there are producers to specializes in using samples from other songs such as vocals, melodies, and or sound effects.

My choice of production is based solely upon choosing scales, tempo, and more.

What this means is that you will get a completely reverse engineered view of how I made Breeze – Straight.

As promised yesterday, we are going to dive deeper into the creative process with โ€œBreeze – Straight Single Series Day 2 out of 31: Beat Pre-Productionโ€

Setting the Tempo: The Heart of the Song

Picking the tempo while metaphorically this can be said, in the matter of the actual fact, sets the pace and energy of any song.

The first thing I consider is what should the BPM be?

BPM = beats per minute.

Each genre varies extremely differently depending upon the type of genre you are trying to make.

Even within a genre, certain lengths of chords or slower or faster paces can also help aid in deciding how the end result will sound.

What sets the pace of the Tempo?

What I have actually done is created a process and system that I call a genre template that sets the pace as a kind of self-made assistant that does all the mundane repetitive tasks that you would have to do for yourself to make the beat the correct tempo.

Rather than taking 1 – 2 hours to load up all the different type of digital instruments, mixing decisions, drums, 5 drum patterns, and sonic placements of instruments in a given song for a specific genre, I have it preloaded in a way that would take me about 10 minutes to compose a beat giving me the ability to begin writing to my beats instantaneously!

The point of doing this is to have all the mixing tools, mastering tools, common mixing decisions, and more in place to be able to get to the more creative aspects of music creation much faster.

This can only occur because of three core principles that I understand about making music design to resonate with the people who will listen and want to read about Breeze – Straight like you are doing right now.

  1. Choosing The BPM

The Genre Template that I used for Breeze – Straight is the [Trap] Template.

The best ranges of this genre is between [ 140 – 160 ] and because I already have several different drum patterns that help determine the grove that would best fit the melody of the composition that I made, all I have to do is increase or decrease the tempo within the given range that would stay within [Trap].

2. Understand How To Create Emotion

The mood of the song play a key role in the tempo.

There is no set pace to really determine the mood of any song before hand.

The movement of the tempo with how a song sounds can be determined by the melody already made and increasing or decreasing the pace to fit the emotion that you determine is best for what you want the audience to feel in what your saying.

For [Breeze – Straight], I aimed for [Triumph that is ascending your past].

The Scale: Setting the Tonal Foundation

The scale chosen to play melodies over has a huge role in setting the emotional response of the melody that you play.

As an example if you play alongside the Persian Scale, what you will find is that most of the melodies that you play will begin to resemble the music from a certain region of the world, mostly middle eastern music.

By this understanding, you should have a clear understanding of how much the scale can affect the way that music can be played, sound, and even feel like your in a completely different place on the plant from where ever you are.

When you get to more advanced way of thinking, you realize that rules are meant to be broken but only until you know that the rules are.

You can essentially create any type of scale that you want but this isn’t a lesson in advance creativity but just an observation of how [Breeze – Straight] was created.

Choosing the Scale:

There is a 3 step process that I personally use to choose a scale.

There may be other composers that use a different method but I am simply expressing my way of doing it for [Breeze – Straight].

1. Dependent on the genre.

Some genres have staple scales that are stamped by what sounds best within the genre.

For instance when you get into trap music, A minor is a great scale for a more darker sound to the melodies and scale but that doesn’t mean that you have to use that scale.

You can also use the Persian Scale as a means to make trap music that would certainly make a difference in the type of Trap Music that you can make within a genre.

2. Dependent on the key.

Have you ever heard a song that the melody sounds good or it should be good but there is a little bit to a weird sound to it for some reason?

It’s feels like drinking water but the after taste doesn’t quite taste like water that your used to.

This occurs in music because most amateur producers don’t put all their instruments on the same key of the song.

For instance, the song make be in F Minor but then they will have their drums on C minor.

The best way to describe this is like being nose blind to your own scent.

Your used to your own scent but you also don’t know what other people think of your scent.

Many times I’ve heard beats that has good melodies but because they don’t put all the instruments in the same key, the whole beat sounds off.

Having instruments out of key could be good for a section of the song to be used as sort of a pre-chorus effect but not to hear it whole song as it is very off putting.

3. Dependent on the Scale.

As a means not to get too technical, let’s look at the scales between major and minor.

Minor scales typically are where you get more sadder music while major scales is where you play music that is on the happier side.

You can always intertwine how a song sounds by the chords in what ever scales you choose of course but for me personally, when I think of a trap song or music that I want to be more on the darker side, I would choose the key A and the scale minor.

The scale of [Breeze – Straight] is [E – Minor]

Most chords and melodies are used on that scale except in some spot to create tension to the sound.

Instrument Selection: Crafting the Soundscape

There is a hidden secret to music that most people and musicians especially would find very surprising but makes a lot of sense once you really begin to understand how to mix music.

Vocals are really nothing more than another instrument in a song.

That’s the secret!

Now, that doesn’t make it not the most important aspect of any song being that language is the most seductive aspect of it which makes or break a song but if you think of it as another color in a painting then you realize that it’s just as important as every other aspect.

While I did skip ahead to what you will read about on “Single Series Day 10: Mixing”, I felt like it was a good way to give you a head start.

Each element of every song creates an overall texture and atmosphere.

Chime

The Chime sound uses in the sound design Chorus, EQ, Reverb, and Compression using the Slyenth1 VST.

Brass

The Brass sound uses a Analog Filter through Analog Lab that I printed the sound and added my own effects towards the Sound Design.

Clavi

The Clavi sound uses in the sound design Chorus, EQ, Reverb, and Compression using the Slyenth1 VST.

For [Breeze – Straight] as you can see, I created this song a blend of organic and electronic elements, creating a soundscape that feels both fresh and timeless.

Crafting the Groove

Now that you’ve finished experiencing the tempo, instrumentation, and scale, it’s time to experience most people’s favorite part of a song, the drums.

With this [Trap] genre template, I have 20 genre specific types of drums that are designed to create the elements that support the feelings that a song gives.

Choosing the wrong drums in a song will do nothing but serve as making the song sound in amateur and in authentic.

Just imagine expecting to hear a bachata song but rather than the genre specific drums you hearing orchestral instrumentation.

That would sound like the person who made the beat has no clue what they are doing and your not used to hearing the music sounding that way so it’s no longer what your used to.

For an example, if I was aiming to make an Amapiano genre beat, I know that the main elements that helps bring forth the whole feeling is the log drum percussion.

Without the log drum, it may make the song sound more in the style of afrobeat.

Drums in a song play a major role part of giving you an experience that makes you resonant with [Breeze – Straight].

Here is my unique process for laying drums to make the beat for [Breeze – Straight].

Laying Down the Drum Pattern

With my genre template, what I create is 5 different premade patterns that I already know that works with the genre.

Everything is already set in place to give myself a sort of assistant that does most of the work for me.

This isn’t a loop or anything of that sort that are samples from other music but rather drum patters that I can switch in between and create different patterns depending on the melody that I made.

There are times where I want to drag a song melody longer than it needs to be to create a different type of vibe and my genre template doesn’t work depending in how far I stretch the chord progression.

This only means that the solution is to change the length of the drum progression that has already been made to match the new length of create another one entirely.

Having the convenience of a genre template simply means that the time needed to come to a complete song will bypass most of the inconveniences of making a song and gives me the creative ability to have given you the experience of [Breeze – Straight].

Here is a list of all the top line instruments that made [Breeze – Straight] sound the way it does.

The 808 Hit Hat is a sound designed by FL Studio.

808 Open Hat

Snare 7

The Snare 7 is a sound designed by FL Studio.

Hard Wind FX

The Hard Wind sound FX comes from Xpand2.

FX Ascenso

The FX Ascenso ear candy ear candy comes from Sytrus which is a FL Studio native plugin.

I Leveled each instrument and created a snare aux and bus, melody bus, and drum bus. I also created an efx, delay, and reverb bus.

Let’s get to the bottom of the beat

I like to think of the bass line as the bottom of the beat.

My method of production creates what I consider a top down method of treating the melody and the percussive elements such as high hats the top line and the bass elements such as the sub bass and 808 as the bottom line instruments.

While this may not appear to be as peculiar, most producers that I’ve ran into choose to make the drum pattern and then make the melody around the drums.

They make the drums, make the high hat patterns and then make the melody which has produced some really great beats.

No matter the way of doing it, as long as the result are that it is effective for the audience to enjoy the song then it’s a winning formula.

Kick 1

The Snare 7 is a sound designed by FL Studio.

808 Sub

The 808 Sub sound uses in the sound design Distort, EQ, and Compression using the Slyenth1 VST.

Full Crate Dust

Full crate Dust is a custom sound designed by Breeze.

(Breeze – Straight) Single Series Day 2 out of 31: Beat Pre-Production Completed

From setting the tempo to choosing the instruments, and crafting the melodies, you now have a better understanding how each decision shapes the final product.

Clearly there is both an art and a science to making music as some things and choices that I made are to tastes others due to my knowledge of music theory.

It takes a lot more extremely detailed knowledge to make the beat sound the way that it does especially in the digital age that has [Breeze – Straight] sounding the way that it does such as velocity changes, pitch changes, and much more but the point is not to make you bored with every single detail.

I wanted to use all the tools, techniques, and emotions that I have into creating something that resonates with you.

Knowing that you’ve read up to this point is more than proof enough that I did that which I am grateful for.

Subscriber: ($0) I seen you around.

Free doesnโ€™t mean that you cannot be valuable.

It simply means that you can be of value through other means of efforts to improve or further the efforts of someone who worked very hard to ensure that you can attain something that you would enjoy.

There are several no cost effective strategies that I have made available for you to ensure that you could advance my career path.

You can choose one or several tactics that will ensure to advance my hard work from the most advance to the least.

– Let people know that you like what I do.

I always remembered wanting to know how it would be if I could talk to an artist directly that I was a fan of or if not a fan, at least loved a song that they made.

Just imagine of being able to ask an artist directly what was the story behind that song or what they were going through and getting a chance to directly ask them that question and being able to get the answer.

Understanding that feeling and never being able to do that, I want to make it be that I can give access to people who want to have a direct contact with me.

I would want to be informed when a new song is being released or other types of activities that are occurring in the life of my artist that I can be informed of directly through a text.

Play the song at parties, at work in a speaker, or play it everyday.

– Add to your streaming platform playlist.

My goal is to make Breeze – Straight become apart of your daily routine.

If I can do this then one of my purposes of making music has become fulfilled.

When you sign up to my email list, I give you a complete roadmap to all the songs in my catalog.

Starting from this song, I have made available the ability to directly add the song to your playlist from whatever streaming platform that you use.

While the income isnโ€™t substantial enough to make enough income to live on, itโ€™s still worth enough to allow my works on the platforms to be of value to you.

– Share this post to your social media account.

Word of mouth is always a great way to help any artist.

Informing your main group, network, community, and more of dope music you found online will always be on of the most important ways to promote an artist.

Sharing goes a long way and is definitely appreciated.

– Do a combination of multiple things listed.

Free can still be a healthy contribution especially when you do a combination of the method mentioned.

This is very much appreciated.

– Create A Cover Song.

As an independent artist, creating a cover song may be one of the most important things that you can do in order to help create revenue not only for me but for yourself.

This can be one of the most important ways you can show homage for the songwriter and recording artist.

One of the most popular covers songs that has ever been created and generated tons of income is Whitney Houston – I will always love you which was originally written and performed by Dolly Parton.

I grew up only knowing the Whitney Houston Version being too young to knew the Dolly Parton chart climbing original.

You can perform your cover song of Breeze – Straight on a stage show without having to purchase a license because the responsibility falls upon the venture to make sure to get a license from the performance rights organization.

Now if you want to create a cover for the song that you can licensed to be sold, you would have to go to the Harry Fox Agency to get a mechanical license to do so.

Understand Iโ€™m cool and donโ€™t really mind if some one does a cover of my song which doesnโ€™t get recognized for the original work owner if it builds an artist career who can make another version better or of equal value of my work but understand that any copyright owner such as myself can block the release of the song.

For me, I donโ€™t really mind because I get paid but for some artist the recognition means more than life itself rather than the advancement of the artist with compensation for the original creator.

I have made it extremely easy to be able to create a cover song by entering your information into and I will send you a the instrumental for Breeze – Straight, the lyrics, and the only complete guide that you will ever need to make money from making a cover of this song.

– Create A Parody Cover

Fair use laws sometimes determines that anyone can create a parody of a song and can be sold without the consent or permission from the copyright owner.

There are cases where the copyright owner loses and the copyright owner loses.

Who is to really determine whether or not who can win or lose.

I feel that itโ€™s just better to be on the safe side and simply do a deal of 50/50 royalties split on the ownership of a parody of Breeze – Straight because when found not capable of using the song without payment involved, you could end up not earning any royalties from the song.

50% of the revenue generated is substantial exchange for the making of a parody for the simple reason that 100% of the song was done without the involvement of the parody owner.

While this may be my take on it because Iโ€™m more generous than most, other would find it more appropriate to want a 80/20 or 90/10 royalties split with the focus being the copyright owner attains the higher payout which is still completely fair with a payment advance for use.

If your interested in creating a parody for Breeze – Straight enter the information in this section for me to instantly send you the instrumental for Breeze – Straight, the lyrics, and the only complete guide that you will ever need to make money from making a parody of this song.
